Illegal dumping is a problem we are tackling head on. Since 2021, the Land Bank has cleared 734 parcels across 125 sites in Flint as part of a first-of-its-kind illegal dumping prevention study.
We've installed boulders, solar lighting, trail cameras, and signage at hotspots. Evidence shows these structural changes do deter dumping. We also partnered with Clean & Green community groups to collect citywide dumping data. Groups identified and helped revive dumping sites and now maintain them.
The Land Bank partnered with the University of Michigan Prevention Research Collaborative on the multi-year CDC funded study. The impact goes beyond the numbers. Residents thank our crews. More children play outside. Neighbors take pride in their spaces. Click the video player to see this transformative effort in action.
