Renovating Vacant Houses. Expanding Homeownership. Strengthening Communities.

Renovate Genesee is the Genesee County Land Bank’s bold new housing initiative designed to turn vacant and underutilized houses into safe, high-quality, attainable homes for residents across Flint and Genesee County.

Powered by the Land Bank’s expanded Construction & Development Department, RenGen represents a major step forward in scaling housing rehabilitation.

 Purchasing Renovated Homes

Renovated homes are listed with local realtors and included on our Listed with a Realtor webpage along with other listed Land Bank properties.  Some homes will be sold to income-qualified households to comply with grant requirements. Details on applicable restrictions are provided with each listing.

A New Era of Housing Renovation

Historically, the Land Bank renovated just six to nine homes each year. Today, through new systems, staffing, and grant funded investments, RenGen aims to elevate that effort to renovate125 homes over four years. Thanks to pilot year funding from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSDHA) and the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the Land Bank is renovating 26 homes this year. The GCLBA aims to secure additional grant funding for future years.
By securing funding, building organizational capacity and working with qualified contractors, RenGen aims to deliver housing at a scale that can meaningfully impact neighborhoods and expand homeownership opportunities.

How It Works

RenGen Homes combines construction expertise, securing grant funding, engaging qualified contractors in the construction trades, and community partnerships to rehabilitate homes and return them to productive use. A portion of proceeds from market-rate home sales are reinvested into future projects, creating a revolving fund that supports continued housing development.

Homes developed through the program include:
- Market-rate homes, sold without subsidy
- Affordable homes, sold to income-qualified households with targeted support

This model allows the Land Bank to continue its mission of expanding homeownership access and revitalizing neighborhoods, block by block.
